The studio is run by David Lilly, who is ably assisted by Paul Yarde. The business is normally open Monday to Friday, but do call before turning up incase we are out working on site somewhere.
THE CRAFTSMAN
David Lilly comes from a long line of artists, craftsmen and engineers. His families' achievements have been as diverse as creating the sewage works for Ghana, exhibiting paintings at the Royal Academy in London and illustrating the original Winnie the Pooh books. In fact, David's own career started in Hotel Management, then through the Music Industry and Wine Trade to end up in Stained Glass in the autumn of 2001.
David loves colour, especially bright colour, so what better to do in ones life than combine colour with light. Simply Stained Glass was what came about when David let his feeling for the medium have their head. Combining an anarchic eye with a fascination for unexpected colour combinations has allowed David to develop the business into a uniquely different Stained Glass studio. He trained in the art of stained glass in Brighton in 2001, and the studio opened in February 2002. David also teaches stained glass for The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum and through workshops at the Simply Stained Glass studio.
THE PAINTER
Paul Yarde has been an engineer, artist and designer for many years, latterly working for Daewoo Motors. Today he is semi-retired but fills his time working with glass. For us he is our painter. He works on painting and staining glass for both commissions and restoration projects. Without him the studio could not function, his skills are ones that are fast disappearing, and to find an artist with his temperament and delicate touch is a difficult task indeed.
As well as his fabulous painting he creates novel garden sculpture combining stained glass panels and reclaimed sea-defences. Paul also teaches for The National Trust and Brighton Adult Education Services.
